Marmara Excursion
The Imperial Gateway:Tracing the Historic Vineyard Legacy of Byzantium and Istanbul.
The wider Marmara region served historically as the imperial gateway, supplying the massive wine demand of Constantinople/Istanbul. While its climate is varied and often humid, its importance lies in its historical trade legacy. Today, commercial viticulture is minimal compared to Thrace, with production focusing on smaller-scale, heritage projects using historical local red varieties. Its contribution is primarily historical, connecting Anatolian wines to Western markets.
